Cabinet sPECIFICATIONS

General Sizing Specifications

Standard cabinet dimensions: Wall cabinets are typically 12″ deep and base cabinets are typically 24″ deep, measured from the back of the cabinet to the front of the face frame and not including the thickness of doors or drawer fronts. The toe-kick opening is 4″ high, with a recessed toe-kick cavity of 2-15/16″ high × 3-1/4″ deep. Some wall or base cabinets may vary from these standards; any exceptions will be clearly noted in the catalog and on your quote.

Face Frames

Our standard construction uses 3/4″ solid-wood face frames with 1-1/2″ stiles and rails, assembled with glued, screwed pocket-hole joints for strength and stability. Custom face-frame layouts are available on request. Paint-grade frames are built in poplar; stain-grade species are selected to client preference—commonly white oak, red oak, maple, alder, and others—unless otherwise specified.

Cabinet box/Carcass

Our cabinet boxes—tops, bottoms, and sides—are built from 1/2″ birch plywood. When a finish is specified, only the exterior exposed ends are finished to match the cabinetry; non-exposed ends and interiors remain standard unless otherwise noted.

Cabinet Backs

Our cabinet backs are a ¼” thick birch plywood back, with a UV coated interior.

Cabinet Interior

Cabinet interiors are constructed with UV-coated birch-veneer plywood and finished in a clear, durable acrylic topcoat for resistance to scrapes, chipping, and routine solvent wipe-downs; the UV coating is applied to the wet surface and instantly cured with ultraviolet light. Natural birch veneer will display light and dark patterning—this variation is inherent to interior-grade birch and is not considered a defect. When a matching interior is specified (commonly for cabinets with glass door inserts), finished interiors other than UV-coated birch are available. Paint-grade cabinet boxes are birch plywood; face frames are poplar; and doors, drawer fronts, and panels use poplar solid-wood frames with 1/4″ center panels. Installation, paint, stain, and sealer are included.

Doors and Drawer Fronts

Our standard doors are 5-piece Shaker with 2-1/4″ stiles and rails. Drawer fronts match in a 5-piece construction with 2-1/4″ stiles and rails, while top-drawer fronts are proportioned with 2-1/4″ stiles and 1-1/4″ rails for proper scale. All doors and drawer fronts feature an eased exterior edge for a clean, comfortable feel.

Drawer Boxes

Our standard drawer boxes are built from 7/16″ birch plywood with butt-joint construction. An upgraded option is available with 9/16″ maple—solid or plywood—featuring English dovetail joinery for enhanced strength and longevity. Every drawer box is delivered fully assembled and sealed with a protective topcoat.

Drawer Glides

Standard drawer glide is the undermount Blum’s Tandem (or equivalent) full extension model, featuring a soft-close feature, and 4-way fingertip adjustability. There may be some instances where heavy-duty side-mount glides are required.

Hinges

Our standard overlay hinges are European-style Blum (or equivalent) concealed cup hinges with integrated soft close. For inset applications, we use Blum concealed cup hinges with a dedicated mounting bracket to allow precise, simple adjustment of inset doors. Hinges are provided automatically in the overlay you select, but you may request cabinets and doors without hinges and/or without hinge preparation if you plan to supply your own—commonly done when a decorative surface hinge is preferred.

Knobs and Pulls

Knobs and pulls are not supplied, and doors/drawer fronts are shipped undrilled. The customer must provide hardware; Kansas Cabinets will install it per your provided layout and instructions at time of installation.

Shelves

Standard shelves are 1/2″ birch-plywood; upgrades to 11/16″ plywood or solid wood are available. Each shelf includes a 3/4″ × 1-1/4″ solid-wood bullnose on the front edge. Shelves are adjustable in 32-mm increments using 5-mm shelf pins.

g.  For stain-grade cabinetry, face frames and door/drawer frames are built from approximately 13/16″ solid hardwood in the species you select, while the center panels are 1/4″ plywood faced with a veneer chosen to match that species. Because solid lumber and veneer are sourced from different logs (and sometimes different mills or regions), natural variations in grain and color will occur; once stained and/or sealed, those differences may either blend or become more pronounced. For example, white oak can present multiple shades—from tan to brown with occasional gray undertones—and cuts (plain-sawn, rift, quartered) can read uniformly or with noticeable contrast. Such variation is an inherent characteristic of real wood and is not considered a defect.

Exclusions

Unless otherwise noted in the bid and/or contract documents, the following are considered standard exclusions from the cabinet package: appliances, vent hood, sinks, faucets, crown moulding, base floor trim/quarter round/base shoe, countertops, backsplash, demolition, electrical, plumbing, HVAC (including vent covers), drywall, knobs/pulls, trash containers, roll-outs, bead board/wall paneling, finishes (paint/stain/sealer), blocking, sales tax, cabinet lighting, and sales tax.
